Collection: Catherine Anselmi

Fossils are signifiers of deep time and transformation; they speak of journeying and ancient storytelling. They are the ancestor of all ancestors, living in the earth, learning their ways, enfolded by time and place. Through an entanglement with fossil rocks found at Kiritihere in New Zealand, I explore time and intra-relating in my practice, searching for ways of materially being with these fossils in situ without removing them from their place of origin. Refusing representational enquiry in favour of being alive to each new intra-action has engendered notions of the work of art as process, or the process as the work of art, where all elements share responsibility for the outcome. Through this decolonising practice, I look for ways to demonstrate respect, co-responsibility, and indebtedness to place and to being.
